Although deep in the heart of summer — with vacations and sunny distractions all around — twenty determined Mavericks made their way to The Mayfield Tavern on Tuesday night to test their poker skills and carve their names into the upcoming Tournament of Champions.

From the outset, it was clear this would be a fiercely competitive evening, but even clearer that two players were destined to rise above the rest in what would become an unforgettable showdown.

In Game One, Jim Elwart and Mike Nass each captured their tables, staking an early claim to the points lead. What no one realized at the time was that this night would turn into a two-horse race, ending in a photo finish.

Game Two followed a similar script, with Elwart once again conquering his table. But this time, it was Amanda Dudek who thwarted Nass’s charge, holding him to a second-place finish while she claimed her table win.

By the time Game Three began, the writing was on the wall — this night would come down to Elwart and Nass. They had pulled well ahead of the field, but as seasoned Mavericks know, strange things happen on these tables, and nothing was guaranteed.

As fate — or perhaps the poker gods — would have it, the two rivals found themselves seated at the same table: Elwart in Seat Two, Nass in Seat Seven. What unfolded was nothing short of a battle for the ages.

At one point, Elwart looked doomed, his stack dwindling dangerously. But in true Maverick fashion, he clawed his way back, and the two warriors found themselves facing off heads-up. Was Elwart about to pull off the elusive trifecta?

Nass wasn’t about to let that happen without a fight. He dug in, refusing to yield, and ultimately claimed the Game Three table. When the dust settled, both players stood with two wins and a second-place finish each — tied at twenty-nine points.

It came down to the tie-breaker: Elwart’s back-to-back wins in the first two games earned him the crown for the night.

An electrifying evening of poker, to say the least.

🥇 Jim Elwart — the night’s victor.
🥈 Mike Nass — a razor-close second.
🥉 Jeremy Jennings — rounding out the podium.

Elwart’s win also shook up the Summer Season leaderboard, propelling him to the top, followed closely by Mike Soper, Cliff Jones, Scott Sutter, and Lewis Iler.

This season is shaping up to be one for the books — so buckle up, Mavericks. We’ll see you on the felts!
